Dr. Uma Nair (AIMS) Joins SaveMom Team as a Remote Medical Officer for our project with Amrita SeRVe

SaveMom is a rural project that addresses preventable maternal and infant mortality and morbidity in India by providing timely care with its IOT devices and telemedicine software during the First 1000 days for women in the remote regions of the country. The programme ensures that women go through a positive pregnancy experience as recommended by WHO in its Antenatal Care (ANC) recommendations published in 2016.
The process includes
1) identifying women who do not yet have access to quality healthcare by partnering with NGOs;
2) training a Community Healthcare Worker (CHW) who would reach out to these women using our kit;
3) Onboarding a medical officer who would review the data provided by the CHW and guide CHW to provide appropriate care to pregnant women;
4) Taking pregnant women to hospitals for maternal and fetal assessments atleast thrice before delivery.
Currently, SaveMom team has partnered with Amrita SeRVE to implement ‘Project SaveMom’ in nearly 100 villages across the country. Dr. Uma Nair has onboarded the team as the remote medical officer and reference person from Amrita SeRVe to implement Project SaveMom in its 101 villages across the country. Dr. Uma Nair is an NRI from USA with a PhD and MD Degree in medical science. She has been a physician since 1990s serving in renowned hospitals and a member of Texas Medical Association, Bexar County Medical Society. She has an active license to practice medicine in Texas and Missouri with certification to be a Diplomat in American Board of Internal Medicine upto 2026. She is currently working full time serving Mata Amritanandamayi Math as a General Medical Consultant at AIMS since 2016. When asked about her option to join Project SaveMom, she said “for me the opportunity to work with the pregnant mothers was literally a ‘divine intervention’ “. She then joined the team as its remote medical officer.

Speaking about her interest in project SaveMom and interactions with the team . She has this to say: “I had wanted to work directly with the underprivileged societies in the Amrita Serve 101 village project and asked permission from Amma as simultaneously Senthilkumar showed the Savemom IoT device to Amma. From those events the pilot project took shape. We started work in 2 months. It is a happy marriage of technology and old fashioned compassionate medical care.” Further she notes, “For me it is a childhood dream come true of working for the poverty stricken population that is unable to represent itself in this modern fast moving society.”
Ever since the first day, Dr. Uma Nair has been great source of inspiration in her work with a great humility, meticulous preparation and dedication towards providing positive pregnancy experience for the women under the care of Project SaveMom in Amrita SeRVe. As a medical officer, she mentors our community healthcare worker and oversees the medical intervention at the ground level by following up with the community healthcare worker. In addition to this role, she acts as a reference point for the SaveMom team and co-ordinates with Amrita team to implement the project seamlessly. We strongly believe that she would be an instrumental for a positive revolution in maternal care for the women in remote regions of our country.
